Character Qualities Based on the Bible
It is our desire at Southside to teach our students to use the Bible, God’s authoritative word, as the guidebook for choices in life. In each grade, we focus on one important character quality for the year and memorize Scripture that teaches us what God’s Word says about that character trait.

Character Quality: Friendship
“A friend loves at all times.” Proverbs 17:17
“A gentle answer turns away wrath.” Proverbs 15:1
“Love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind, and with all your strength and love your neighbor as yourself.”
Mark 12:30-31

1st Grade
Character Quality: The Golden Rule
“Treat others as you would like them to treat you.” Matthew 7:12
“Be kind and compassionate to one another.” Ephesians 4:32
“So now I am giving you a new commandment: Love each other. Just as I have loved you, you should love each other.” John 13:34

2nd Grade
Character Quality: Empathy
“This is my commandment, that you love one another as I have loved you.” John 15:12
“Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as Christ God forgave you.” Ephesians 4:32
“Rejoice with those who rejoice; weep with those who weep.” Romans 12:15
“Carry each other’s burdens, and in this way you will fulfill the law of Christ.” Galatians 6:2

3rd Grade
Character Quality: Truth and Trustworthiness
“Honor your father and mother, and love your neighbor as yourself.” Matthew 19:19
“Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.” John 8:32
“You shall not give false testimony against your neighbor.” Exodus 20:16

4th Grade
Character Quality: Respect and Honor
“Do unto others as you would have them do to you.” Luke 6:31
“Accept one another, then, just as Christ accepted you, in order to bring praise to God.” Romans 15:7
“Show proper respect to everyone; love the brotherhood of believers, fear God, honor the King.” I Peter 2:17

5th Grade
Character Quality: Team Work
“Two people can accomplish more than twice as much as one; they get a better return for their labor. If one person falls down, the other can reach out and help. But people who are alone when they fall are in real trouble.”Ecclesiastes 4:9-10
“As iron sharpens iron, a friends sharpens a friend.” Proverbs 27:17
“If the whole body were an eye, where would the sense of hearing be? If the whole body were an ear, where would the sense of smell be? But in fact, God has arranged the parts in the body, every one of them, just as he wanted them to be. If they were all one part, where would the body be? As it is, there are many parts, but one body.” 1 Corinthians 12:17-20

6th Grade
Character Quality: Kindness in Words and Actions
“Don’t repay evil for evil. Don’t retaliate when people say unkind things about you. Instead, pay them back with a blessing. That is what God wants you to do, and He will bless you for it.” I Peter 3:9
“May the words of my mouth and the thoughts of my heart be pleasing to you, O Lord, my rock and my redeemer.” Psalms 19:14
“Don’t use foul or abusive language. Let everything you say be good and helpful, so that your words will be an encouragement to those who hear them. Get rid of all bitterness, rage, anger, harsh words, and slander, as well as all types of evil behavior. Instead, be kind to each other, tenderhearted, forgiving each other, just as God though Christ has forgiven you.” Ephesians 4:29, 31-32
